How to get to Ostrog Monastery

Ostrog sits in the hills between Podgorica and Nikšić, about an hour's drive from Podgorica and an hour and a quarter from Budva.

The easiest way: a tour with transfers

A tour picks you up, drives the mountain road for you and brings you back. From the coast, the most popular trip combines Ostrog with Tara Canyon and Durmitor. From Podgorica, a short tour takes you straight to the Upper Monastery.

By car

Take the main road between Podgorica and Nikšić and turn off at Bogetići, where the road to the monastery begins. From there a narrow, winding mountain road climbs to the Lower Monastery, with views opening up at every bend. Drive it slowly and give way on the tight sections.

There's parking at the Lower Monastery, and an upper car park a short, steep walk below the Upper Monastery. In peak season the upper car park fills early, and shuttle vans run between the two for a small fee.

By train or bus

The train from Podgorica stops at Ostrog station in about 45 minutes. From there it's a taxi ride, or a long uphill walk, to the monastery. Buses between Podgorica and Nikšić can drop you at Bogetići, about 10 km below the Lower Monastery, where a taxi takes you the rest of the way.
